From the ancient legends of Hawai‘i rises Māui—the trickster, the warrior, the demigod. From taming the sun god, La to make the days last longer, to raising the islands from the sea, his feats shaped the world, and all he did was driven by the love for his people. Master artist, designer, and storyteller, Christian Wolfe, classically captures this legendary god’s essence and brings many other Hawaiian myths to life with his brand new series Hawaiian Legends, debuting this coming Spring 2025.

Maui, the Hawaiian Demigod
Christian Wolfe’s first portrayal of Maui, the Hawaiian Demigod burst into public view in the late 1980s. It quickly became one of the most recognized and celebrated artistic visions of Hawaiian mythology—featured on book and music covers, fine art prints, and even magazine spreads that circulated throughout the islands and beyond. The original canvas, a 36" by 48" oil painting, marked not only Wolfe’s debut as a painter, but also the beginning of a lifelong dialogue with Hawaii’s gods, legends, and landscapes.
Although this 80's version of "Maui" was actually Wolfe's first major oil painting, that early vision was raw and powerful, capturing the heroic essence of Maui and introducing Wolfe as a rising artist whose brush carried both reverence and daring. Three decades later, that seed has blossomed into a body of work unlike anything else in Hawaii's art today. Wolfe’s newest portrayals of Maui—rendered with unparalleled mastery, design, and even brought to life with animation—push the myth into a new era. These works do not simply depict
a legend; they embody it, fusing classical artistry with modern storytelling to give Maui’s feats the cinematic presence they deserve.
This journey from Wolfe’s first painting to his present work is more than artistic evolution—it is the fulfillment of a vision born decades ago. Where once stood a singular canvas, there now rises the foundation of a greater mythic cycle: Maui’s epic feats, Pele’s fiery reign, Hi‘iaka’s journeys, Hina’s grace, and more. Together, these works aim not only to honor Hawaii’s timeless stories but to present them in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences across the world—through books, exhibitions, and even immersive animated experiences.
What began as a single painting has become one of Wolfe's lifelong mission: to create the definitive, classical, and unprecedented
visual canon of Hawaii's sacred, passionate, colorful, and symbolically-rich mythology.
